The Samsung Galaxy S4 already was presented and in just a few weeks will be available in several markets. Surely there were a lot of users enthusiastic about acquiring the device and run a cooked ROM like the ones offered by CyanogenMod. However, it seems that this will not be possible, since the current Samsung CM developers have said they have no plans to support the device.
The relationship between Samsung and CM people lately has been quite contentious. First, Samsung must try to protect their intellectual property. Some of the choices they have made to help do so are just not very friendly to developers, and some even violate the GPL (open source license that covers everything in the Linux kernel used in Android). On the other hand, there is a group of people who have to have limited access to such intellectual property so they can build a working firmware for the device. They need everything to be covered by the GPL, and even a little friendly advice from manufacturers is what is sometimes required to get everything working perfectly. The two parties could not come together, so now there is frustration and developers have spoken. XpLoDWilD, speaking on behalf of Team Hacksung said:
Nobody at team hacksung (the team behind galaxy s2, note, s3, note2, gtabs… official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, the bugs we have on the s3 will probably be there on s4 too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes qualcomm release sources, but exynos sources we had were far from actual galaxy products. I’m pretty sure the same will happen for this one.
That’s a uniform “no” from us.
And XpLoDWilD is not alone. Other developers are saying basically the same. Codeworkx, Entropy512 and kernel developer Gokhan Moral told that refuse to develop for the Galaxy S4.
So if you had considered buying a Galaxy S4 and wanted to install a ROMs from CyanogenMod unfortunately know that you won´t be able to do so, unless the developers change their minds.
Também não espero comprar mais nenhum modelo Samsung…
